FARM DAY

Saturday, May 24, 2008

9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

 

 



There is no charge for admission or participating in activities for this annual event which features two well-known speakers, children’s crafts and games, displays of quilting and other hand work done by Island artisans, tours of the farm house, pea patch gardens, museum, and other farm buildings.  The Historical Society’s Museum Gift Shop kicks off its new season, featuring authors signing new Puget Sound historical books including The Mosquito Fleet and Anderson Island.  Delicious homemade snacks and lunches will be available, and the Plant Sale will have an impressive array of herbs, vegetables, and flowering annuals and perennials.

Mary Robson, recently retired from WSU Extension serving 8 years as coordinator of King County Master Gardeners and 9 years as facility Horticulture Extension agent, will speak on The Soul of the Garden.  Mary is Western Editor of MasterGardener magazine, has written gardening columns for The Seattle Times and national publications, is a published book author, and lectures for Master Gardener certification classes.

Don Ehlen of The Insect Safari makes presentations at elementary schools, and regularly speaks at the Pacific Science Center, Northwest Trek, The Burke Museum at UW, and library summer reading programs throughout Western Washington.  Don will display more than 2500 preserved specimens as well as an assortment of live bugs, make a presentation about them, and lead a safari on the farm property where participants can discover insects and have him identify and share information about each one.

This year’s Plant Sale features:  Lumina and Magic Lantern Pumpkins, Bright Swiss Chard, Orient Express Cucumber, Delicata Squash, Merlot Lettuce, and Sweet Basil to just name a few of the 38 herbs and vegetables.  We looked for short seasoned varieties when possible.  Flowers include:  Yarrow, Digitalis, Colony Blue Lupine, Kniphopia, Mexican Feather Grass, Lavender and Profusion Zinnias newly available in the last two years.
